📢Highways Update – Working Together for Safer Roads in Blisworth

Traffic calming measures and speed limits in the village.

20 mph sign
  • Your Parish Council has been very active in addressing concerns over traffic volumes and speeding, which we know are key issues for residents. We have worked with West Northamptonshire Council (responsible for the roads) and Northamptonshire Police (responsible for enforcement) to push for improvements, but decisions ultimately rest with these authorities. Largely it is a challenge to deal with increasing traffic volumes in our area and we experience similar problems to communities across South Northamptonshire.
  • 20mph Limit – We pressed for wider coverage of the 20mph zone than WNC allowed, and also requested a 40mph limit on Towcester Road, which was refused. Recently the 30mph limit was extended along Stoke Road towards the Knock Lane junction. We have also highlighted speed concerns in Station Road. The current scheme is a significant step forward, and we will continue to lobby for wider coverage if residents support this. We are aware that some of the signs are not in a good position and restrict the pavements; we have alerted WNC to these problems for their consideration. The temporary 20mph advisory and 30mph signs placed by the Parish Council have now been relocated to alternative locations across the village.
  • Traffic Calming – We asked WNC to consider speed bumps (“vertical traffic calming”), but unfortunately their policy is not to install any more due to noise and vibration concerns for nearby residents.
  • Chicane on Stoke Road – A chicane is planned near the allotments, the only site WNC considered suitable due to sightlines. To prioritise this scheme, your Parish Council has agreed to contribute some funds from the Community Infrastructure Fund linked to the Northampton Gateway development, with part of that funding earmarked for Blisworth.
  • We also welcome the new dropped kerbs alongside the 20mph scheme, which together will make pedestrian routes safer across the village. However residents must be considerate with parking and placement of wheelie bins to avoid restrictions on the pavements. The parish council has no power of enforcement over traffic parking or fines as this is a responsibility for WNC and Northamptonshire Police.
  • While the Parish Council has no enforcement powers, we have raised concerns about driver behaviour and inappropriate parking with Northamptonshire Police. If you would like to make a difference, please consider joining the Community Speed Watch group – contact our Clerk at clerk@blisworthparishcouncil.gov.uk to get involved. Details are on this link https://www.northants.police.uk/…/community-speed-watch/
  • Or alternatively residents can speak to the Neighbourhood Policing team at one of the Beat Bus visits to raise the concerns direct.
