🌿 Graveyard Shift Team Cultivates a Haven of Biodiversity

Recent efforts in Blisworth’s Closed Cemetery have been spearheaded by the Graveyard Shift volunteer team, in close collaboration with Parish Council councillors. Thanks to their dedication, the Closed Cemetery is blossoming into a peaceful sanctuary at the heart of the village—open to all for quiet reflection and the enjoyment of native wildflowers and local wildlife.

The team is currently applying for grants and welcoming voluntary contributions of expertise, plants, seeds, tools, machinery, and a bit of muscle to further enhance the cemetery’s biodiversity. Whether you’re a keen gardener or simply care about pollinators, there’s a way to get involved.

Volker Rail Volunteers

Volker Rail – Outstanding Support at Blisworth Closed Cemetery!

Volker Rail kindly provided a team of cheerful, hardworking men who worked tirelessly throughout the day to support the Graveyard Shift volunteers with important tasks at the Blisworth Closed Cemetery.

The Volker Rail team was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! They removed all the old weed‑suppressing matting—which had long since stopped suppressing anything and had become completely tangled in brambles and nettle roots – and took it away at no expense to us. They also cleared and removed an old tarpaulin that had been dumped on the site and was beyond saving due to the number of holes in it.

In addition, they moved extremely heavy logs and ash‑tree rounds to create a feature in the shady area, cleared a large pile of vegetation cut back by volunteers in September, and even dug over a section of ground ready for planting in the spring. All the vegetative waste was also taken away free of charge.

These were tasks a bit beyond the physical capacity of our volunteer group and would have taken us many months to complete. Thanks to Volker Rail’s generosity, strength, and enthusiasm, the closed cemetery has taken a significant step forward in its restoration.
